Studying in Australia may be different to what you are used to. Students at Holmesglen Institute of TAFE usually attend 3-4 lectures or classes a day. Classes can last from one to four hours. There may be a lot of reading and research to do after classes. You will be expected to do 20-25 hours of homework each week after your classes. Students are encouraged to participate in class. Do not wait for your teacher to come up with all the ideas - put forward your own ideas and ask questions.
The relationship between students and staff is usually informal and relaxed. You may use the teacher's first name.
There are staff available at Holmesglen who can help you with any study problems you may have. Remember to get help as soon as possible. Do not wait too long before asking for help or you will fall behind with your studies. If you have other difficulties, staff in the International Centre or in Student Services are available to help. For students who need help with preparing their assignments, or developing research and study skills, Language Support Staff can assist. Remember you will not be the first student to have such a problem.
Holmesglen also offers a 4-week Study Skills program to students unfamiliar with studying in the Australian context. These programs take place in January and June each year and provide students with academic, language and study skills for study in Australia. The orientation program offered free to each student introduces all students to the resources available at the campus to help students with their studies. Remember that it is important you attend all classes
At Australian TAFEs and Universities, the academic year runs from February to late November. Each academic year has 2 semesters (4 terms). ALL courses commence in February each year. Some courses also start in July and a few also have a third commencement in October. Holmesglen's English language (ELICOS) programs have several intakes throughout the year
International Student Services
Orientation Sessions
As many students find life in Australia quite different from life in their home country, orientation activities are provided to help students become familiar with Australian culture and customs and to introduce students to the Institute and its services. All students will be provided with an orientation information pack. This information pack details many aspects of living and studying in Melbourne and introduces students to life in Australia. In the week preceding their course, students will be provided with an orientation program which will further develop on the material supplied in the information pack. Orientation sessions also include enrollment, a campus familiarisation tour, studying at Holmesglen, living in Australia, an excursion and opportunities for meeting other students.
Overseas Student Health Cover
International students are required to contribute to the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) scheme. This cover must be paid before a visa is issued. Holmesglen requires that students purchase OSHC for the full duration of the studies at Holmesglen (Program Length Cover). This protects you from rate rises in OSHC and gives you the security of continuous cover. Please contact the International Centre at Holmesglen for more information. OSHC will cover most medical expenses whilst the student is in Australia. By signing Holmesglen’s application form, students agree to be subject to the terms and conditions of an OSHC provider and their policies. Holmesglen’s preferred provider is OSHC Worldcare.
Medical Services
Doctors are available on the Chadstone and Moorabbin campuses. Consultations with the Institute doctors can be made on appointment. There is no charge for this service. Medical Centres are located in the vicinity of the Waverley and Moorabbin campuses.
Cost of Living
Melbourne is a reasonably priced city providing good quality affordable living and abundant accommodation. Students will need A$18,000 per year (excluding tuition) to cover living expenses including accommodation, food, transport, entertainment, clothing and books. Counselling Services
Counsellors are employed to assist international students with personal and study problems and to provide educational and vocational counselling. Students receive full assistance to achieve their study goals in Australia including transfers from Holmesglen to university. Full information about the services for international students can be obtained from staff at the International Centre on all campuses.

Weekend
The Institute is open all weekend which affords students the opportunity to study additional subjects or repeat subjects at the weekend. International students who have paid a full fee are allowed to enrol in additional subjects in their course at the weekend at no extra cost. This may enable them to fast-track some diploma programs.

Students studying English language programs at the Institute have access to modern and well-equipped Flexible Learning Centres. A wide range of software, audio-visual and printed materials is available for practice and study in these Flexible Learning Centres. Thank you Note - To Mrs. Lien and the Lien Chau Com.
Dear Mrs. Lien and the Lien Chau Com.,
Words can't even describe how thankful and appreciated I am for your work at this moment while writing you this email. This is the second time that I have to thank you for bringing me another opportunity to fulfill my study path and a whole new precious experience in my life.
Mrs. Lien and the staff of the company has been with me from the very first start 4 years ago, and ever since. You have given me all the considered advices and consults tailored upon my case, with the careful consideration from my study records to my study outcome desire. The communications between the company and me with my family is really excellent, which made the process so much easier and saving a lot of effort despite the distance of locations. The advises they have provided me are really accurate (based on the experiences they have about the destinations I have chosen) which made me fitting in much more quickly; with not only the study environment but also the accommodations and lifestyles of Melbourne, Australia.
When they gave me all the options from the very first beginning and I was a bit overwhelmed, Mrs. Lien considered Holmesglen would be a suitable option for me. Throughout the last three years of the Bachelor Course, Holmesglen provided me small size classes which has helped me to interact more with the tutors in which way gain more practical experiences and useful discussion. The course has been carefully consulted and made to fit with my study path from Diploma moving up to Bachelor so that I can fit in with the academic requirements of the Bachelor course gradually. The teachers and professors from the course has always willing to help me not just during-class time but sometimes also from the late library study after-class time. They are always thoughtful and considerate to take time and explaining to me who is an international student, which English is not my native language. With practical placements in the industry, I was not only given job opportunities but also the realistic experience each graduates need.
Those are some of the reasons why this time, when I have to consider my study journey again, Mrs. Lien and the company highly recommended Holmesglen. They even prepared and helped me to meet in person with the representative from Holmesglen when they visited Vietnam. Hence, it made my decision much less doubtful and much more realistic.
And now my Dream will be started again, very soon. And it’s you Mrs. Lien and the staff of the company who help me to make it come true. It was more than my pleasure to have known and worked with you ever since I stepped in your office when I was just 18 and now back with you as an grown-up graduates. I will definitely keeping you update with my upcoming adventures and wishing your company the best wishes for all the new students.
My deeply appreciation and thankfulness
Best Regards,
Katie Tieu Phuong Chung "
